I was giving a demonstration at a blacksmithing
event one day and someone asked me if I could make a knife out of a
horseshoe. The result is what you
see below.
Each knife is made from an entire horseshoe. The handle is one end of the shoe
folded over and twisted and the other end is the blade. Some I make are
half a shoe with a flat blade. They make a functional, quality knife that
can be quite the conversation piece.
Customers have used these for steak knives, hunting knives and
utility knives. After I sold the
first horseshoe knife the new owner called me back to say he had skinned
two deer and one elk and the blade was still sharp. This blade strength comes from a
special quenching medium of soap, salt and water. Other report indicate they are performing very well.
These horseshoe knives come in a number of sizes from pony shoe
size 0 to draft horse size. Each
one is unique and the blades can be serrated for cutting efficiency on
tough materials.
Pony shoe size 0 plain, partial or full serration, blade length
between 2 7/8 and 3 1/2 inches, overall length 6 to 6 1/2 inches -
without sheath $70 , with sheath either metal belt clip or leather belt
loop $ 85.

Standard horseshoe size 0 plain, partial or full serration, blade
length between 4 and 5 1/2 inches, overall length 7 1/2 to 8 1/2 inches -
without sheath $75, with sheath including a leather belt loop $89..

Draft horse size shoe plain, partial or full serration, blade
length between 6 and 6 1/2 inches, overall length 11 inches - without
sheath $100, with sheath including a leather belt loop $ 115.

Boot dagger or letter opener from shoe size 0, blade length
between 4 and 5 inches, overall
length 8 to 8 1/2 inches - without sheath $85, with sheath either metal
belt clip or leather belt loop $95.

Well, if you are going to make a horseshoe knife, why not a
horseshoe fork? Total length between 9 and 10 inches. $60.
